Australia’s all-rounderMarcus Stoinis has announced his retirement from One Day International cricket(ODI), as confirmed by Cricket Australia on February 6 (Thursday). He expressed his intention to concentrate on T20 cricket moving forward. Stoinis concludes his ODI career having participated in 71 matches since his debut in 2015. He was previously included in the squad for the Champions Trophy and will now require a replacement.
“Competing in ODI cricket for Australia has been an extraordinary experience, and I am thankful for every moment spent in the green and gold. Representing my nation at the highest level is a memory I will always treasure,” stated Stoinis.
“This decision was not made lightly, but I feel it is the appropriate time for me to depart from ODIs and dedicate myself to the next phase of my career. I have a wonderful rapport with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and have greatly valued his support,” he continued.
Stoinis achieved his career-best performance with the bat in only his second match, scoring an unbeaten 146 against New Zealand in Auckland in 2017. His most recent appearance was during the tour of Pakistan last November, where he accumulated a total of 1,495 runs and took 48 wickets in the format. Stoinis was also a member of Australia’s World Cup-winning team in 2023 and was honored as the team’s ODI cricketer of the year for the 2018-19 season.
Stoin has played a crucial role in our ODI framework over the last ten years. He has proven to be not only an indispensable athlete but also a remarkable individual within the team. His leadership qualities are evident, and he enjoys immense popularity among his peers. It is fitting to commend him for his ODI career and the numerous accomplishments he has achieved, stated Andrew McDonald, the Head Coach of the Australian men’s team.
