“They impose taxes on us, and we impose taxes on them” Donald Trump conveyed a message to India

“They impose taxes on us, and we impose taxes on them” US President-elect Donald Trump has announced his intention to implement reciprocal tariffs on nations, such as India, that impose elevated duties on American products.

Donald Trump articulated a principle of reciprocity in trade during a recent news conference, stating, “If they impose taxes on us, we will impose the same amount on them. They tax us, and we respond in kind. In most instances, they are the ones taxing us while we have not reciprocated.” This statement was reported by the news agency PTI.

Trump’s comments were made in the context of a discussion regarding a potential trade agreement with China, but he specifically highlighted India and Brazil as countries that levy significant tariffs on certain American products.

Emphasizing the importance of fairness, Trump remarked that if India imposes a 100% tariff on U.S. goods, the United States will reciprocate with the same rate. He stated, “The concept of reciprocity is crucial; if India charges us 100%, should we not charge them an equivalent amount? They send us a bicycle, and we send them a bicycle in return.”

He further noted, “They impose tariffs of 100 and 200 percent. India has high charges, and Brazil does as well. If they choose to impose these tariffs, that is acceptable, but we will respond with equivalent charges.” These remarks were made during his press conference at Mar-a-Lago.

Howard Lutnick, selected by Donald Trump for the position of Commerce Secretary, echoed the sentiments expressed by Trump. Lutnick emphasized that “reciprocity” will be a central element of the new administration’s trade strategies, stating, “How you treat us is how you should expect to be treated.”

In contrast, the outgoing Biden administration remarked on Tuesday that it is leaving the India-US relationship “in a very strong place,” expressing confidence that this relationship will continue to receive bipartisan support during Trump’s presidency.

Kurt Campbell, Deputy Secretary of State, informed reporters during a conference call in Washington on Tuesday, “We remain very ambitious regarding the US-India relationship. Over the past several months, we have engaged at high levels, particularly during the QUAD summit in Delaware, and we anticipate further high-level engagement in the final weeks of the Biden administration.”
